PSS’s Inaugural Dermatology course serves to equip community and hospital pharmacists with the fundamentals of managing eczema, urticaria, and acne. The training covers skill sets such as appropriate patient counselling, medication and product recommendations, and non-pharmacological advice.
Participants at the Dermatology Workshop
Held on the 21st of August 2025, this course was attended by 20 community and hospital pharmacists from various healthcare sectors in Singapore. The trainers were experienced dermatologists from Sengkang General Hospital: Prof. Derrick Aw, Dr. Phoon Yee Wei, Dr. Cao Taige, Dr. Felix Kho, and Dr. Brian Chia. The course provided an overview of acne, eczema, and urticaria, along with guideline-directed treatment recommendations. Aside from an overview of common dermatological conditions and guidelines for their treatments, the trainers also shared valuable clinical practice pearls and real-world patient management experiences. Participants had the opportunity to clarify their doubts and discuss common patient queries. The session concluded with a hands-on objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and a multiple-choice question (MCQ) assessment, allowing all participants to apply their new knowledge.

“I have gained a deeper understanding of these three skin conditions and felt more confident in making therapeutic recommendations. Key takeaways included the importance of selecting topical steroids with appropriate potency to prevent patient non-adherence in eczema, and the significance of distinguishing skin conditions that mimic acne.
Overall, I feel that this course is highly beneficial for pharmacists who encounter patients with these conditions. The course empowers pharmacists to make appropriate treatment recommendations and refer patients for early specialist review when necessary.”
